I am not a huge Supreme Court watcher, but I keep my pinky toe on the pulse of it, mainly from reading George Will, who comments on the court occasionally and a snippit here or there in the paper. Anyhow, It is amazing to me that George H.W. Bush nominated Souter to the Supreme court. In today's Red/Blue world that never would have happened.

Souter was a supposedly safe conservative from the miniscule town of Weare, New Hampshire, not known as a bastion of liberal politics. At the time of his nomintation, he was called a stealth candidate by the liberal commentators because he had little published beyond his prior decisions unlike Robert Bork, whose very name is now a verb inside the beltway. Depending on your point of view, he either grew in the job, or betrayed his heritage.
